Almost 40 different species of wild bees could be documented at home in the garden.
For those who go through life with their eyes open, new surprises constantly await. When Ingemar Fries, after 35 years of researching honey bees at the Swedish University of Agriculture, put "emeritus" after the title of professor, he took his camera and set out on a journey of discovery in the family's garden. He wanted to know how the wild bee population was doing. New alarms are constantly being heard about endangered solitary bees, while more and more studies show that wild bees' pollinating ability is greater than previously thought. Ingemar was surprised by what he found. He was able to document almost 40 different species of wild bees at home in the garden. There were red mason bees that build their nests in passages that the caterpillars of the house goat gnaw, bluebell bees that, like the children of the fairy tale, spend the night in swaying bluebell flowers. And conch mason bees, which live in empty conch shells. Not to mention all the bumblebees that are also included in the motley crew of wild bees.
This book is a result of his photo safari. In true Linnaean spirit, he has arranged his findings by genus and season and supplemented them with facts about bees and pollination, recipes for wine and advice on how to help the wild bees with food and housing. It is a knowledgeable guide who brings us into this exciting and for most unknown world. As Carl von Linné put it: Nature is greatest in the small (Natura in minimis maxima).
