With the second, revised and greatly expanded Swedish edition of Injuries and diseases on trees in hand, the forest walker can examine and determine a total of 305 injuries and diseases in 17 genera of the common coniferous and deciduous trees, using simple, easily distinguishable characteristics.
672 color images illustrate a number of important injury symptoms that occur in Sweden and the Nordic countries. Descriptive texts point to causes and conditions for the damage to occur, as well as risks of confusion. Above all, damage images are described that can be traced back to a single cause in each individual case. This includes drought, cold, thunder, lack of nutrition, air pollution, salt from the sea or roads, pesticides on roads, as well as insects and other small insects. Many infectious diseases caused by parasitic fungi, bacteria, mycoplasma or viruses are also described, even some that appear mainly as secondary pests. Entirely new parts in this edition, or old ones in new processing, mainly deal with important and current damages such as rust, rust, birch rust, beech bark disease and the recently appearing Phytophthora diseases and ash shoot disease, many new insect pests of both conifers and hardwoods, above all bark borers, as well as wood rot and other defects on the wood. A whole new chapter is devoted to alder.
The book has been edited for Swedish and Nordic conditions, and has been supplemented with information on where the injuries occur in the Nordic region. The expert review has been carried out by Pia Barklund, forest mycologist and pathologist, and Åke Lindelöw, forest entomologist, both at the Swedish University of Agriculture in Ultuna.
